Heeters 30th U-Haul Anniversary

Heeters celebrate 30 years with U-Haul

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind.—A common response when people in Indiana and around the country—even around the world—are looking for hard-to-find scooter, moped or motorcycle parts is, “Go to Heeters.” “We’re not a real big business, but we’re pretty well known nationally and even in other countries,” stressed Dave Heeter, owner of Heeters Performance Center and U-Haul Dealership (013357), which is celebrating its 30th U-Haul anniversary. “Just the other day, I shipped a jacket to Japan. One time, we even shipped a 2-inch U-Haul hitch ball to Madagascar!” “We carry things even dealers don’t carry,” observed Liela Heeter, Dave’s mother.

Well known for generations The Heeter name has been well known in the northern Indiana area since 1928, when Dale Heeter started a car, truck and tractor repair business called Heeters Garage. Over the several decades that followed, it was passed on to Dale’s son, Dick, and eventually to Dick’s son, Dave. In 1977, Dave Heeter started his own business, a motorcycle/moped sales and service division called Heeters Performance Center. He added the U-Haul Dealership in 1980. “We wanted to diversify a little bit,” Dave explained. “Motorcycles and mopeds are a very seasonal business, so we wanted something to complement that, and that’s why we added the U-Haul Dealership. Sometimes when a customer buys a moped or scooter from us, they’ll rent a U-Haul trailer to take it home, or people who come here to rent a truck will end up buying something from our showroom. “The U-Haul business was meant to help our small town, as well,” he continued. “I don’t want to pat myself on the back, but it’s really helped people to have U-Haul rentals here instead of having to drive several miles to rent a truck.” “The president of a local bank once thanked us for serving the community as a U-Haul Dealer,” Liela added. “I never really looked at it that way, but I guess it’s true.”

Family business Heeters is a family business in every sense, often having three generations working together at one time. Liela and Dick Heeter ran the place for Dave while he was in the Army from 1984 until 2003, when he retired from the military. During that time, Dave’s sisters, Linda and Lori, helped out, as well. “I told them if it ever got to be too much for them to handle, they could close it up, but they kept it going the entire time,” Dave noted. Today, Dave’s 16-year-old son, Justin, helps out his father and grandmother (Dick Heeter passed away in July 2009). “Justin is pretty sharp,” Dave emphasized. “He watches and learns a lot, and helps out wherever he can. I have a lot of good memories growing up working with both my grandfathers and my dad, so it’s fun working with Justin, too.” “We all enjoy working together,” Liela added. “Justin is great to work with. He does anything grandma asks him to do,” she laughed.

“Determination and family spirit” Though Dave spent much of the past 30 years in the Army, he’s been around long enough to know how much things have improved for U-Haul Dealers. U-Haul equipment has improved quite a bit, he said, noting that he remembers the old stick-shift trucks, and trucks without air conditioning. Also, he remembers writing all contracts by hand, and, like many dealers, he appreciates the advances in technology U-Haul has made over the years. One more thing he certainly wasn’t sorry to see go away was the clamp-on bumper hitch. “I dreaded having to put one of those on in the winter,” Dave admitted. “I’d be out there freezing, and it took a good amount of time to put them on, so it wasn’t fun.” While there have been some trying times over the years, the good times far outweigh the bad for the Heeter family. “We get by on determination and family spirit,” Liela declared. “I could have retired years ago, but working is good for me and I enjoy it. Plus,” she chuckled, “Dave still needs me around to show him how to do things from time to time.” Dave doesn’t have any immediate retirement plans, but he knows when the time comes, the family business should be in good hands for a long time. “I’d like to keep it in the family and maybe pass it on to Justin someday,” Dave noted. “And I have a two-year-old son, Skylar, who is coming up the ranks, too!”

Sounds like the Heeter family name will remain the one to turn to for many years to come. Congratulations, Heeters, on your 30th U-Haul anniversary!
